David gegen Goliath 1973

Wer im Motorsport mehr Geld investiert, fährt auch schneller lautet die Devise.
Doch der 80'000 DM teure RS Capri unterbietete die Runden Zeit nur gering gegen das 3500 DM *Go-Kart.
Dabei war dieser Vergleich gar nicht so aus der Luft gegriffen, wenn man die Relation zwischen
Eigengewicht und Leistung, das Leistungsgewicht, als absoluten Masstab anerkennt.
Ein 100 ccm Go-Kart von damals wies mit rund 18 PS und 55 kg ein Leistungsgewicht von 3,05kg/PS auf.
Und der in diesem Jahr zu den potentesten europäischen Renntourenwagen zählende Ford Capri
brach es bei 950 Kg und 320 PS auf ein Leistungsgewicht von 2.97 kg/PS.
Hans Heyer, der viermal Go-Kart Europameister und einmal Vize-Weltmeister wurde, pilotiert hier das Go-Kart.
Im gleichen Jahr wurde er vom Ford Rennleiter Kranefuss, nach drei jähriger Praxis als Tourenwagenfahrer, als Werksfahrer zu Ford geholt um in der Deutschen Rennsport Meisterschaft weitere Punkte für Ford heraus zu fahren.

* Der Name Go-Kart stammt von einem Produzenten in Kansas/USA, der seine Kinderwagen seit 1911 unter diesem Namen vertrieb.
Und die erste Go-Kart Konstruktion vom kalifornischen Ingenieur Art Ingels hatte unbestreitbar manches gemeinsam.

The motto in motor racing is: the more money you invest, the faster you drive.
But the RS Capri, costing DM 80,000, only slightly undercut the lap time of the DM 3,500 *go-kart.
This comparison was not entirely unfounded if one recognises the relationship between
weight and power, the power-to-weight ratio, as the absolute benchmark.
A 100 cc go-kart from that era had around 18 hp and weighed 55 kg, giving it a power-to-weight ratio of 3.05 kg/hp.
And the Ford Capri, one of the most powerful European touring cars of the year,
had a power-to-weight ratio of 2.97 kg/hp at 950 kg and 320 hp.
Hans Heyer, who was four times European go-kart champion and once vice world champion,
is piloting the go-kart here.
In the same year, after three years of experience as a touring car driver, he was recruited by Ford racing director Kranefuss as a works driver for Ford to score more points for Ford in the German Racing Championship.

* The name Go-Kart comes from a manufacturer in Kansas, USA, who has been selling his prams under this name since 1911.
And the first Go-Kart design by Californian engineer Art Ingels undoubtedly had a lot in common with it.
